July 2026: Open Letter to the Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, Seniors, and Rural and Remote Health

On July 9, 2026, APNS sent an open letter to the Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, Seniors, and Rural and Remote Health in response to Saskatchewan’s newly announced Continuing Care Strategy.
As the voice of professional nurses in Saskatchewan, APNS remains committed to advocating for policies, practices, and investments that strengthen the nursing profession and improve health outcomes for the people and communities we serve. The Continuing Care Strategy represents an important opportunity to shape the future of care in our province, and we believe it is essential that the perspectives of nurses are reflected in its implementation.
In our letter, we acknowledge the government's commitment to improving continuing care services while emphasizing a critical priority: the recruitment, retention, and long-term support of Saskatchewan's nursing workforce. No health-care strategy can succeed without the skilled professionals who deliver care every day. Professional nurses are central to the delivery of safe, high-quality, person-centred care across homes, communities, long-term care settings, and the broader health system.
At APNS, we recognize that supporting professional practice is about more than filling vacancies. It means creating environments where nurses can thrive, lead, and build meaningful careers in Saskatchewan. It means advocating for professional autonomy, ongoing learning opportunities, workplace well-being, fair compensation, and the resources necessary to provide the highest standard of care. It also means ensuring that nurses' expertise is valued and included in conversations that shape health-care policy and system transformation.
As our province's health-care needs continue to evolve, APNS will continue to champion initiatives that strengthen the nursing profession and support a sustainable workforce for generations to come. We are committed to working collaboratively with government, health system partners, educational institutions, employers, and our members to advance solutions that benefit both nurses and the communities they serve.
